The North American Hockey League has announced the addition of the Elmira Aviators for the 2024-25 season, playing out of the East Division. Local businessman Marc Stemerman heads up the new team, as Elmira moves to junior hockey after multiple years in the Federal Prospects Hockey League.
In the FPHL, Elmira has seen some instability with teams in recent years. The Elmira Enforcers had played out of First Arena from 2018 until 2021, followed by the Mammoth for a single season in 2022-23. The Aviators replace the Elmira River Sharks, who will also only last a single season.
The River Sharks Facebook page made a post on April 30, 2024 eluding to the change forthcoming. The move appears to drop the FPHL down to ten teams as the league enters the Commissioner’s Cup Final this weekend.
