GMHL Drops Western Division; National Junior Hockey League Takes Shape

It was announced over the past weekend that the Greater Metro Hockey League would be dropping the GMHL West Division comprised of teams from Alberta and British Columbia for the 2023-24 season. As a result, most of the teams from the GMHL West will now be playing under the National Junior Hockey League flag for the coming season.

The NJHL notes on their website, “As late as this past Friday [May 26, 2023], we tried our best to have our concerns within the GMHL addressed, but were unable to come to an agreement.”

The league will be comprised of eight teams as Edson, High Prairie, Burns Lake, Kitimat, Northern Alberta (Enoch), Fox Creek, Gibbons, and Mackenzie will begin as the inaugural teams.
