After months of silence from the Western Professional Hockey League, the league finally showed some signs of life this week, announcing “play” for the 2022-23 season, though with some caveats. The league’s definition of play this season is that the lone remaining team, the Las Vegas Millionaires, will be playing an exhibition season against Senior ‘A’ competition this season.
The league’s initial announcement came as they announced their disengagement of their agreement with Benizio Sports Consulting, which the league stated they “contracted Benizio Sports Consulting to bolster business operations back in September of 2021 but has since determined that moving forward, the safety of the environment surrounding the players and every organization affiliated with the WPHL will undertake the upmost priority.”
With the removal of the Billings Blizzard as well, the league is now back down to just a single team, with the Las Vegas Millionaires Facebook account stating they would be playing, with a schedule release coming. However, looking at the WPHL site, there is already a schedule listed for the Millionaires for this season.
On the schedule, opponents listed are the Santa Rosa Growlers, Vail Yeti, Reno Ice Raiders, Fond Du Lac Bears, and the Norcal Stampede, which are all Senior ‘A’/semi-professional teams. Following this season, which the league is calling a “soft opening”, as they described to Bench Minor Hockey, the league is looking to have 6-10 teams for the next season.
At this time, no news regarding players, coaches, etc. has been announced by the team or league, as they have their first game scheduled to take place on November 11th.
