The Fairbanks Ice Dogs forced an overtime in Game 1 of the Midwest Division semifinals against the Minnesota Wilderness, and were able to secure the win in the extra frame as well.
Fairbanks opened up the scoring in the first period as Jacob Conrad scored on the power play to make it a 1-0 score. Minnesota’s Cole Crusberg-Roseen and William Persson then scored to put the Wilderness up 2-1 as the teams headed into the final minutes of regulation time.
With 27 seconds remaining in regulation, and the net empty, the Ice Dogs’ Tyler Stewart picked up his first goal of the postseason and forced the game into overtime.
As the teams began OT, an early penalty to Fairbanks set up a power play for the Wilderness and an opportunity to close out the game. With the shorthanded situation though, it was Fairbanks that picked up the goal on the man-disadvantage as Brendan Miles put the game away at the 2:12 mark of OT.
Kayden Hargraves earned the win in net for Fairbanks, stopping 35-of-37 shots. Matthew Smith picked up the OTL, stopping 19-of-22 on the night.
