The CAJHL’s Vernal Oilers are on their way to Canada for the last weeks of the league’s inaugural half-season, after splitting from the WSHL at the new year. With the final week of the regular season approaching before the CAJHL’s Champion’s Cup tournament, the Vernal Oilers announced a special guest will be joining the team behind the bench.
Kevin McClelland is no stranger to the Oilers name, having played for the Edmonton Oilers in the 1980’s and skating with the likes of Wayne Gretzky, Mark Messier, and Jari Kurri to name just a few of the legends to wear the orange and blue of the era. Per the Vernal Oilers Twitter, McClelland will be joining the team for the CAHJL playoffs.
McClelland is no stranger behind the bench either, as he boasts an impressive resume of two years as a head coach in the WHL, five years as an assistant in the AHL, and eleven seasons as a head coach in the Central Hockey League/ECHL. His most recent professional stop was with the Wichita Thunder for six season in both the CHL, and then the ECHL when the two leagues merged.
After leaving Wichita, McClelland has since been working with the West Coast Renegades youth hockey organization, based out of Utah.
