After two seasons of not being awarded, the Western States Hockey League will host the 2022 Thorne Cup Finals in Cold Lake, Alberta this season, with the Aeros hosting the event.
The 2020 Thorne Cup Finals were to be held in Greeley, Colorado prior to the season being canceled due to COVID. As the Colorado Eagles moved to the USPHL the following season, and the WSHL canceling the 2021 season, the event in Greeley was never able to be held.
With now only seven teams in the league this season, the format for the Thorne Cup Finals, and if there will be any type of playoff outing, will be interesting to see. Traditionally, the Finals featured six teams as they battled for the season’s top prize.
The Thorne Cup was last awarded in 2019 as the El Paso Rhinos won their second consecutive championship, and fourth total, in Ogden, Utah. The Rhinos have since moved to the NAHL and NA3HL leagues.
