The United States side of the Western States Hockey League continues to experience troubles as they attempt to get back off the ground following their year off last season. After having a team fold last weekend after only one game, the ensuing reschedule has been hit as well.
The Bellingham Blazers were originally scheduled to travel to Utah to take on the Vernal Oilers this weekend, but after last weekend’s events, that plan was scrapped, and Bellingham was rescheduled to play the Seattle Totems in a single game to open the season. News today from the league’s broadcast partner, Black Dog Hockey, now shows that the game has been canceled.
Additionally, it was announced that Vernal would be playing in exhibition games instead this weekend, playing against the Utah County Blizzard. Unfortunately neither the Oilers or Blizzard have anything posted to their respective websites or social media to confirm, but it appears the Blizzard team that the Oilers will be playing are part of the Mountain West Hockey League, a semi-professional men’s league.
The part that causes us to pause regarding the opposing team however, is the Blizzard are advertised as playing in Rock Springs, Wyoming this weekend against the Rock Springs Miners in their season opener. We reached out to the Miners this morning, and they confirmed that this weekend’s games were still occurring, so we’ll have to wait and see what happens in Vernal.
As of now, that pushes the opener for Bellingham to November 12th against Vernal, and the opener for Seattle to November 19th against Bellingham.
